A five-year-old boy is in counselling due to suspected sexual abuse. The child displays highly sexualised behaviour, and a potential perpetrator within the family is suspected. A stable therapeutic relationship has been difficult to establish so far – the uncertainty is too great, and the family system too opaque. Previous methods such as the family board or the climbing man tree reached their limits: The
classic figures lack emotional expressiveness, especially for very young children.

Use of the Emotional Dog Family:

To enable a low-threshold, playful approach for the child, the Dog Familyis used – a deliberately dynamic and slightly chaotic game board that reflects the familiar disorder of many burdened family systems. The child-friendly drawn dogs with expressive facial features create projective distance without losing emotional experience.

The child is allowed to uncover questions one after another and choose a suitable dog on the picture each time. When the question comes up: "Which dog looks like your grandpa?", the boy points to the top right dog – a threatening-looking dog standing dominantly behind a much smaller, insecure dog.

Conversation & Effect:

In the subsequent conversation, the child clearly states:

"He scares the little dog. If he tells the secret, he'll go to a home. Nobody believes him. Then everyone will think he's a liar."

This statement, symbolised by the dog figures, clearly shows the boy's emotional conflict between fear, loyalty, shame, and guilt – a dilemma that is often unspeakable verbally. The Emotional Dog Familyenables an initial opening in this highly sensitive case – without overwhelming or confronting.
